A Little Bit About Us
Since 1977 when Dobco first began, we have continually experimented with new and old ideas to come up with carnival games that had an appeal to the general public. We constantly keep in mind that this business, whether a traveling carnival operation or a stationary amusement, is first and foremost an entertainment business. This is where the people come to play and be entertained and right from the inception of these ideas, we look at that factor, to attract players to our games.
Our first successful game was built out of shear determination to find a game that included the watergame type of operation, but that fascinated people by its looks and was housed in a center location. We originally built the Rising Waters in a wood and canvas frame, hoping that it would have that portable appeal to traveling operators. We soon found out, that the complications involved were much more that we would want in our busy schedule, much less offering it out for sale. We eventually put the game into a trailer mount and we entertained millions of people with it and found it to be a very great source of revenue for our operation. Eventually, we took our game to Bobs Space Racers for manufacturing, given that this was their area of expertise and hence they have been selling it ever since. The product quality and viability has held firm throughout the years since we first began with it in 1982.
Our next success, was the Leap Frog, which in 1984 was born out of one of our employees, Kim Sidor, returning from a fair in Phoenix, Arizona, where he had heard that there was a new game. He explained that one would take a mallet and whack a lever to hoist a frog into the air toward some sort of target area. At the time, we had never heard of this type of concession and we put our imaginations to produce a game called the Leap Frog, where one would take a large stuffed hammer and send a bright green Kermit-like frog flying through the air toward a typical silver garbage can. That year we were privileged to witness hundreds of thousands of people bursting into laughter as they participated and watched others participating in sending the Frog flying. We took this game into the IAAPA show that year and won Best Concession Award. It finally felt as though our great efforts had paid off!
We then produced a game called Pistol Dart, which lead to a game called Safe Dart and eventually another new game came our way, which we called Plunkit. An old classic ball throw game, called Mighty Mouth was developed and made successful as well. In the late 80's my brother John Dobson, brought into play a very unique idea, with the Wacky Wire, which was, our most successful challenging skill game to our credit. In the last several years, we have been working closely with my brother Mike Dobson, to produce the Krazy Curve, Road Racer, Slam Bank, Blockbuster and Skatterball which again have proven to be winners in our business.
A few years ago we introduced a new look to the Wacky Wire, called The Wizard. Currently in development is "Old Smokey", "Rock'n Roll" and the Pop-it game.
These are just a few of the ideas we've put on the table the ones that have been a notable success. Today, we probably could account for at least one or two new ideas that we have experimented with yearly on the midway since we incorporated in 1977. We continue to put our creative efforts toward bringing to our midway and our customers new and innovative designs and ideas in the industry. As one game passes its time, we indulge in new concepts and try out these concepts from direct experience on one of the worlds largest midways, Conklin Shows. We are fortunate to have this venue to try out and test our concessions across Canada and throughout the U.S., where volume alone is a great test of endurance as well as productivity.
Our goal is to keep our customer successful, year after year and in keeping with this goal, we provide as much support for our products as is possible. Please do not hesitate to call and ask about our product or the particular operation of our products to compliment your choice in carnival games on your midway or at your theme park.
In closing, my partner, Deborah and I would personally like to thank all of our customers for their continued trade with us. In addition, we would like to thank our employees, past and present, for their diligence, and boundless energy. Their insights are invaluable, to our operation, on the carnival side of things as well as in the production of new games and the fostering of customer support.
Sincerely
Stephen Dobson
